What does an X-Ray Technician do

They work in hospitals, offices of physicians; medical and diagnostic laboratories, diagnostic imaging centers and outpatient care centers.

X-Ray Technicians are more properly known as Radiologic Technologists. They also are known and/or have job titles such as X-Ray Techs, Radiographers, Radiology Technicians,  Radiology Technologists and Registered Radiographers.  An X-Ray Technician job description includes a primary duty of performing diagnostic imaging examinations using x-rays.  Additional  X-Ray Technician job duties include:
  • explaining the procedure to the patient
  • positioning the patient properly
  • positioning radiation protection devices such as lead shields
  • setting x-ray equipment at the correct angle and height over the appropriate area of a patients body
  • setting controls on the x-ray machine to produce x-rays or radiographs of the appropriate density, detail, and contrast
  • placing the x-ray film under the part of the patients body to be examined and make the exposure
  • removing the film and developing it
  • following physicians orders precisely
  • keeping patient records and adjust/maintain equipment
  • preparing work schedules and evaluating purchases of equipment

Other specialties include fluoroscopy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mammography.

An X-Ray Technician will work about 40 hours a week but may have evening, weekend, or on-call hours.  Some work part time.
